Inside Tumucumaque is a cross-media project that takes visitors deep into the wilderness of the Brazilian Amazon.

Set in the Tumucumaque nature reserve in northwestern Brazil, the interactive experience leads into a clearing in the rainforest and opens up new perspectives. The rainforest is presented through the eyes of its inhabitants – the animals. Glide through the treetops as a harpy eagle, hunt in the rivers as a giant otter, or navigate the darkness as a bat scientifically grounded and staged immersively.

Through the project, the ecological interconnections that usually remain hidden become perceptible, and the Amazon’s crucial role for the global climate is made strikingly clear. Instead of abstract numbers, visitors directly experience the vulnerability and the fascination of this ecosystem. Scientific knowledge is transformed into a sensory encounter that sparks empathy and makes the protection of the rainforest a shared responsibility.

The image shows a digital illustration of a dense rainforest. In the foreground, large leaves and dark shadows are visible, while in the center a bright beam of light opens the view into the depth of the forest. Thin lianas hang from the tall trees. At the center, the logo with two stylized leaves and the text “INSIDE TUMUCUMAQUE” is placed. The atmosphere feels mysterious yet inviting, like an entry into the world of the Amazon.

The interactive VR experience places users in the role of five endemic animal species. Based on scientific research, their senses are brought to life in both visual and haptic ways.

A sensory journey of discovery – grounded in science

Inside Tumucumaque was created in close collaboration with the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and the digital staging artists of Artificial Rome. Its foundation lay in scientific data, field recordings, and observations from the world’s largest tropical rainforest, which were translated with great detail into sound, movement, and space. With hundreds of handcrafted models and original sound recordings, an experience was created that does not explain abstractly but makes emotionally tangible why the protection of tropical ecosystems is of global importance.

The image shows a caiman, almost completely hidden beneath the water’s surface. Only its head and part of its back are visible above the water. The scene is set in a dense rainforest, with lush green vegetation lining the riverbank. The water reflects the surroundings, creating a mysterious and slightly menacing atmosphere.
The image shows the opening of an exhibition in a large, modern museum space. Several visitors are gathered in small groups or moving around the room. Circular green areas on the floor mark stations where people are wearing virtual reality headsets and experiencing content. Large projection screens hanging from the ceiling display nature imagery. Exhibition texts are visible on the walls, while additional people stand on a gallery level in the background.
Digital artwork in the style of an abstract illustration: A dense rainforest is depicted in blue and white contrasts, featuring palm trees, hanging vines, and lush vegetation. At the center, the silhouette of a flying bat stands out clearly against the background, giving the scene a mysterious and immersive quality.

Formats

Inside Tumucumaque opened up powerful ways of experiencing the Brazilian rainforest across a variety of formats:

Inside Tumucumaque was internationally recognized for its artistic and technical excellence.

The project received Gold at the Red Dot Award 2018 (including the categories Interface & UX Design and Educational Illustration), Gold at the Art Directors Club Award 2019, and Gold at the Annual Multimedia Award 2019.

Its impact unfolded not only within expert circles but also in major museums: in 2018, the installation filled the atrium of ZKM Karlsruhe (The Art of Immersion III), and in 2019 it was presented at Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart in Berlin.

International festivals such as VR Days Europe (now Immersive Tech Week) and the Silbersalz Festival also featured Inside Tumucumaque, making it accessible to broad audiences.

With hundreds of hand-painted models and sound recorded on site, it is an intense experience designed to foster empathy for nature.

Creative Review, UK design press

Inside Tumucumaque demonstrates how immersive media can connect art, science, and conservation.

The project showed that immersive media go far beyond artistic expression: they can spark empathy, convey knowledge, and initiate dialogue on protecting the foundations of our natural world.
